28th October, Kuwait: Hong Kong celebrated a seven-year wait to win the Men's 5-Player Team event at the 25th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships while Korea successfully defended the Team title in the Women's division.
Ivan Tse, Eric Tseng, James Lui alternating with Ernest Kwok alognside Tony Wong and Michael Mak started off the second block with 1132 and then blitzed the lanes at the Kuwait Bowling SPorting Club with 1280 before closing out with 1139 to bag the gold medal with 7031.
Hong Kong, who won the Team gold back in 2012 when they hosted the Asian Championships, was in seventh position after yesterday's first block, took over the running from overnight leader, Japan after their stunning 1280 in the fifth game.
Chinese Taipei's Wu Hao-Ming, Zu Zhe-Jia, CHen Yuan-Hsin and Lin Pai-Feng took over second spot from host Kuwait after they posted a promising 1184 in the second block opening game.
They added 1131 and 1136 to clinch the silver medal with 7005. Singles silver medallist, Du Jianchao led his team-mates, Wang Hongbo, Chi Mingyu, Wang Zhiyong and Qi Wankang to picked up the bronze medal for China with 7001. Japan missed out on the podium by 23 pins with a lack-luster second block effort to end in fourth with 6978.
Singles gold medallist, Timmy Tan won his second individual gold medal and Malaysia's fifth after topping the All Events with 5805. Du also picked up his second individual silver and China's by finishing second with 5745. Korean men, who has yet to win a gold or a silver, settled for a second bronze medal after Kang Heewon finished third with 5724. His compatriot, Kim Junyung missed the podium by 6 pins in fourth position.
Meanwhile, Korea successfully defended the Women's Team title they won in Hong Kong in 2016 after Lee Nayoung, Kim Moonjeong, alternating with Lee Yeonji along with Kang Sujin, Baek Seungja and Jung Dawun overhauled overnight first block leader, Malaysia for the gold.
The champion reeled in 1178, 1232 and 1130 for a second block series of 3540 and a 6-game total of 7045. Malaysia, who had the Singles and Trios gold medal in the bag, had looked set to win their third after leading the first block.
But Sin Li Jane. Esther Cheah, Siti Safiyah Amirah, Nur Syazwani Sahar and Shalin Zulkifli found the medium oil condition a bit tricky to handle managing only 1053, 1038 and 1093 to settle for the silver medal with 6825.
Chinese Taipei's Chang Yu-Hsuan, Wang Ya-Ting, Chien Hsiu-Lan, Tsai Hsin-Yi and Huang Chiung-Yao improved one spot from fourth in the first block to third to pick up the bronze medal with 6781.
China, who was third yesterday, missed out by 110 pins after slipping down to fourth with 6671. Lee Nayoung and Baek Seungja gave Korea a one-two finish in the Women's All Events standings with 5884 and 5760 respectively. Trios gold medallist, Sin Li Jane added a bronze medal for Malaysia in third with 5714.
The top 16 men and top 16 women in their respective All Events standings qualified for the ROund-Robin Masters finals with the first block of 8 games tomorrow and the second block of another 8 gmaes on October 30. The top 3 men and top 3 women with the highest pinfalls will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout finals.
