Malaysia, Singapore tops Trios first block

21st September, Bangkok Debutant, Jovi Ma, Tony Wong and Wu Siu Hong clinched Hong Kong's first medal of the 27th MWA Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships 2024 after finishing third in the Men's Trios event behind Malaysia and Korea winning the gold and silver medals.

The second Malaysian trio had a stunning start in their second block with 755 in the fourth game. They added a respectable 638 in the fifth game before ending in style with yet another sizzling 717 to finish with 3861 total. Overnight leader of Park Dong Hyuk, Lee Ik Kyu and Kang Myung Jin managed 3814 to finish second, 147 pins behind.

Hong Kong, China's second trio of Jovi Ma, Tong Wong and Wu Siu Hong also started well with 702 and 705 in the fourth and fifth games but ended with just 564 to leapfrog into third spot with 3797.

Japan's Tomoyuki Sasaki, Yuki Murahama and Takuya Miyazawa made a late bid but missed by 43 pins for fourth while Singapore's second trio of Muhd Jaris Goh, Mike Ong and Joel Tan completed the top five with 3726.

In the next squad, overall leader of the first block, Kim Kyung Min, Hwang Dong Wook and Bae Jung Hun started in a worse possible way, managing only 587 in their opening game. They continued to struggle adding 549 and 590 to end their effort with 3730 despite topping the squad.

Macau, China's first trio of Zoe Dias Ma, Lee Hok Hin and Lee Tak Man reeled in 662, 709 and 643 to haul themselves up to second with 3700, just 30 pins behind the Koreans. The other Malaysian trio pf Izz Naqiuddin Putera, Shaqeem Izwan Teh and Tun Hakim took third spot with 3691.

The top three from this squad managed fifth, seventh and eighth positions respectively in the combined scores. The other Hong Kong trio of Keith Mark, James Lui and Ivan Tse ended seventh in this squad and 14th position overall with 3635.

After completing three events (18 games), Rafiq Ismail leads the All Events standings with 4021. Perfect gamer and Singles silver medalist, Jarrod Langford of Australia remained in second with 3998. Tong Wong is the only Hong Kong men occupying 15th position with 3760.

The medal ceremony for the Trios will be held on Monday, September 23 after the completion of the Team of 5 second block.
