Hong Kong, China nationals qualify in last squad

3rd May April, Petaling Jaya: 2019 Asian Championships Team gold medalist, Michael Mak of Hong Kong, China qualified for Men's Open Round 1 finals of the 42nd Malaysian International Open 2024 in the final squad of the qualifying round while Daniel Tse Lok Sang made the cut in the desperado squad.

Mak, who has been struggling to find his strides and was sixth in the reserves pool with 1368, finally found his line to reel in a stunning 741 and took his 6-game total to 1456 to ensure qualification. He almost made the top 4 bracket but missed it by two pins.

Team-mates, Kieth Mark Sin Kin (1455) and Wu Siu Hong (1426) were the earlier two Hong Kong, China nationals to have qualified in sixth in the overseas pool and sixth in the mixed pool respectively. 2023 Macao-China Open champion, James Lui Chin Hung was pushed off the mixed pool in the last four squads on final day.

Alex Yu Ho Yin, Lau Kwun Ho and Ivan Tse Chun Hin failed to make the finals. Two-time national champion and six time Regional PBA Tour winner, Sam Cooley of Australia, topped the overseas pool with 1492 followed by Muhd Jaris Goh of SBF, Singapore in second with 1488.

Four perfecter gamer, Jordan Dinham of Australia finished third with 1463 ahead of another Aussie, Blake Walsh in fourth with 1458. Wan Muhd Zarif Ikram, 2022 champion Ahmad Muaz, Chong Jun Foo of ABAS/Hera, Sarawak and Shahrukh Amin Zulkifli occupied the top four local spots with 1523, 1517, 1510 and 1493 respectively.

The cut at 1408 was tied by Jeremy Yeo of SBF, Singapore and Wan Muhd Naqib Norazizan of TWF Shaklee/X-Proshop, Malaysia. Two Aussies, Cameron Johnston and Blayne Fletcher missed the cut with 1404 and 1398.

Local qualifiers positioned 5 to 12, overseas qualifiers positioned 5 to 12, qualifiers from the Mixed pool position 1 to 16 along with the top 3 qualifiers from the Desperado squad and the defending champion will contest the Men's Open Round 1 finals on May 4.

Local qualifiers positioned 4 to 10, overseas qualifiers positioned 4 to 10, qualifiers from the Mixed pool position 1 to 12 along with the top 2 qualifiers from the Desperado squad and the defending champion will contest the Women's Open Round 1 finals on May 4.
