27th June, Macau: Daisuke Yoshida of Japan averaged 267 over four matches to capture his first Men's tour title in a new and exciting scoring system used for the first time at the ABF Tour Macau 2016 while debutant, Lee Young Seung of Korea won the women's crown.
With the new scoring being deployed, stringing together as many strikes as possible definitely gives a competitor an edge which was exactly what Yoshida did. The 24-year-old from Nagoya, struck early with a double as Cheng managed to spare his first two frames.
A miss in the third frame did not appear to cost Yoshida much as he was able to knock down additional strikes. Cheng fought back with three strikes-in-a-row from frame 5 but failed to add more allowing Yoshida to take win the match with ease with a total of five strikes.
The champion also posted the highest game of the tournament after winning his opening match in Round 1, 289-246 against Annop Arromsaranon of Thailand.
He continued with another easy victory in the second round by defeating 2010 Macau leg champion, Joshua Chow of Hong Kong with another high scoring 278-232 match. Yoshida reached the final with his third victory over Korea's Lee Won Seok, 257-245 in the second semi-final match before his triumph in the final. Cheng had to strike in his tenth frame to beat Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong in the other semi to face Yoshida.
The Taiwanese also had two easy passages in the first two rounds, defeating Badin Lerdpiriyasakulkit of Thailand, 277-191 in Round 1 and Korea's Lee Dong Eun, 265-232 in Round 1. The champion picked up US$1,000 and Cheng US$500. The losing semi-finalists took home US$250 each.
Meanwhile Lee Young Seung, who failed to defend her Macau China Open title yesterday, made amends with victory in the tour. Despite opening her first frame, the 20-year-old Korean National Sports University student downed altogether five strikes to beat Wang Ya Ting of Chinese Taipei for the women's title.
Lee booked her place in the final after defeating Kim Mi Ae, 243-199 in the All-Korean first semi-final match. She also beat compatriot, Kim Hyun A, 246-231 in her opening round and 2011 Macau leg champion, Julia Lam, 257-252 to advance to the semi-final.
